Write a 1500
words (for BA); 2000 words (for MA)
paper (typed, double-spaced, 12-point font, and 1” margins all
around; refer to MLA style; see
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/675/01/)
In your final paper, one
of the films (you could either work on one singular film; or talk about
multiple films that are related) you
are writing about should be from the film list (refer to the end of this
handout); at least two references you will be using should be
from our syllabus while you are always welcome to quote other
academic/semi-academic sources.
SUBMISSION: Please submit the essay to the
lecturer’s email address maran@nagoya-u.jp
with the subject “AFH Final Paper”. I prefer WORD, but if you do not have WORD, I am OK
with other formats(but it will appear weird in GOOGLE doc). The Word file should contain “AFH”
+ the student’s name in its file name. I’d send out confirmation email
once your assignment is received. Late submission is not accepted unless
emergency happens.

Note on Plagiarism:
Plagiarism: A writer who
presents the ideas of words of another as if they were the writer’s own (that
is, without proper citation) commits plagiarism. Plagiarism is not tolerable in
this course or at Nagoya University. You should avoid making quotes or drawing
on figures from nowhere—you must provide sources of reference for quotation
and/or citations you use in the paper. This applies to images and media clips
as well. Failure to observe this would risk being charged of plagiarism. In this
University, plagiarism is a disciplinary offence. Any student who commits the
offence is liable to disciplinary action. [All assignments/papers will be
checked]
Please indicate your quotes,
and format them in MLA style. Sample essay could be found at https://owl.english.purdue.edu/media/pdf/20090701095636_747.pdf
AIM: Make your discussions SPECIFIC, and SMALL.
NO NEED to cover each and every aspect of one film/one film culture/one
period/a whole film movement etc. You are expected to review, evaluate, and
even critique certain concepts (such as keywords proposed or elaborated on by
scholars) and/or arguments (much detailed explanations), based on your reading
journals/lit review. It is also perfectly fine to revisit your reading journal
films, and discuss them in further details. You should be able to present your own interpretation and viewpoints
further by approaching/analyzing specific films (production features; styles;
themes and subjects, film auteur, etc.) listed in the syllabus. You are
also encouraged to keep the balance between the analysis of film texts and the
critical reading of theories. We expect you to discuss your final paper ideas
on Aug 2nd workshop.
